Access to clean water remains a daily challenge for millions of people around the world, but a global fundraising campaign led by YouTube creators MrBeast and Mark Rober has demonstrated how digital influence can help drive action on one of the world’s most pressing development challenges.
The campaign, known as #TeamWater, raised $40 million to support clean water projects intended to reach two million people. Launched in August 2025 in partnership with international nonprofit WaterAid, the initiative brought together more than 10,000 content creators, turning their online audiences into a global network of supporters for water access.
The campaign drew participation from creators across countries and digital platforms, using videos, livestreams, social media challenges and fundraising appeals to engage audiences in the cause. Rather than relying solely on traditional charity appeals, #TeamWater used the reach of online creators to bring the issue of clean water to millions of people who might not otherwise encounter development campaigns.
The funds support WaterAid and its partners in delivering locally appropriate, sustainable water solutions. These include solar-powered wells, rainwater harvesting systems, gravity-fed water systems and piped networks serving homes, schools and healthcare facilities. The goal is not simply to provide short-term relief, but to help communities secure reliable access to water for years to come.
The need remains significant. According to WaterAid, approximately one in ten people worldwide lack clean water close to home. The consequences extend beyond drinking water, affecting sanitation, hygiene, education and healthcare. Where water is difficult to access, girls may lose time that could be spent in school, healthcare facilities may struggle to maintain safe conditions, and families can face additional burdens in meeting everyday needs.
For WaterAid, the partnership brings together the visibility of digital creators and the organisation’s experience in developing long-term water, sanitation and hygiene solutions. The campaign also builds on the earlier creator-led initiatives #TeamTrees and #TeamSeas, which raised funds for tree planting and the removal of waste from oceans, rivers and beaches.
The success of #TeamWater highlights the potential of online communities to contribute to development efforts when public attention is connected to credible organisations and practical interventions. It also demonstrates how entertainment platforms can become channels for collective action, bringing together creators, audiences, donors and development organisations around a shared goal.
As the campaign moves from fundraising to implementation, its lasting significance will be measured by the communities that gain dependable access to clean water and the improvements this brings to their health, education and daily lives.
